Radish-based cover crop mixtures mitigate leaching and increase availability of nitrogen to the cash crop

چکیده

Agricultural soils are at risk of nitrogen (N) leaching especially during the fallow period in autumn and winter. Cover crops grown to capture soil mineral N that otherwise would leach groundwater. They can serve as green manure providing cash crop spring. We investigated whether mixing species cover enhance therefore reduce more effectively than pure stands without increasing hypothesised mixed with complementary traits will accumulate biomass. It was also expected residues from higher biomass lower C:N ratio mineralise faster subsequently increase In a 4-year field experiment, were between August February rotation different crops. used eight treatments, including three stands: radish (Raphanus sativus), vetch (Vicia sativa) oats (Avena strigosa), all possible 2- 3-species mixtures (no crop). Treatment effects on losses estimated by analysing concentrations samples leached pore water below rooting zone modelling volume per plot. Most occurred winter while amount spring negligible due precipitation. correlated negatively biomass, uptake root length density. Radish most productive dominated mixtures. Compared fallow, contained reduced 49–73% characterized quick cover, high low moderate ratio. Subsequently, containing mineralized quickly, resulting an 70–110% compared fallow. Making the Most of Cover Crop Mixtures

(Note: Interest in planting cover crops has increased dramatically the past few years, not only in NYS but in ag regions across the US. Attendance at the Cover Crop & Soil Health session at the Empire State Producers’ Expo has been 90 – 100 the past few years. As growers returned to this practice they began to experiment with a wider range of cover crops than ever before, including brassicas li...

Leaching and Sorption of Nitrogen and Phosphorus by Crop Residue

Overland flow from cropland areas often contains nutrients and residue materials can either contribute to runoff nutrient load through leaching or remove nutrients by sorption. Measurements were made of leaching and sorption of nitrogen and phosphorus from corn (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Pastiche) residues placed in solutions conta...

Nitrogen leaching from organic agriculture and conventional crop rotations

A great challenge to science is to elucidate how agriculture can feed the increasing world population without damaging the environment, while preserving other resources such as freshwater. In the Seine basin, characterised by intensive agriculture, most of surface and underground water is contaminated by nitrate. Conventional agriculture has regularly increased the use of industrial fertilisers...

Crop Nitrogen Assessment

Assessment of nitrogen content from crop leaves has been of interest worldwide to help growers adjust N fertilizer rates to meet the demands of the crop. A multi-spectral imaging system was developed for in-field real-time assessment of plant nitrogen stress in corn (Zea mays L.) crops indicated by plant reflectance and measured using a vision-based multi-spectral imaging sensor (MSIS). The obj...
